Bilibin Ivan Yakovych (1876 - 1942)

An outstanding Russian painter, book illustrator and stage designer, a member of the Association Mir isskusstva (Art World). Born in the village of Tarhovka (near St. Petersburg). Graduated from the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg University. In 1889 studied at the art studio of A. Ashbe in Munich, and then - under the tutelage of I. Repin at the art studio of Duchess M. Tyenisheva and was an auditor to St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. After a number of ethnographic expeditions, the artist, as an expert in the Russian North, showed his art gift in the illustrations of the folk tales and stories, as well as in the design of magazines of the early twentieth century. After the October Revolution of 1917 he left Russia. Since 1920 he had lived in Cairo, then - in Alexandria. In 1925 he settled in Paris, where he created the outstanding theatrical scenery for the Russian operas. He designed the ballet of Stravinsky the "Firebird" in Buenos Aires and a number of opera performances in Brno and Prague. In the years of 1935 - 1936 he worked on the monumental panel "Mikula Selyanynovych" for the Soviet Embassy in Paris and soon returned home. Settled in Leningrad, taught at the all-Russian Academy of Arts, continuing his work as an illustrator and a stage designer. The works are stored in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, and many other museums of Russia and Europe.
