An outstanding Ukrainian painter and teacher. Born in the village of Kobyletska Polyana, the Transcarpathian region today. During 1910 - 1914 he studied at Budapest Academy of Arts under the tutelage of I. Reves. Since 1918 he had worked in Uzhgorod. Together with A. Erdeli he organized the first exhibition of the Transcarpathian artists (1921), opened Uzhgorod Art School (1927), and was the initiator of organizing the Association of Fine Arts Workers in Sub-Carpathian Rus (1931). Taught at Uzhgorod School of Applied Arts (1945 - 1957) and at Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts (1951 - 1957). Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Artists since 1958, People's Artist of the USSR since 1963. Lived and worked in Uzhgorod. Author of landscapes, religious compositions, and portraits.
