Vasnetsov Victor Mykhailovych (1848 - 1926)

A prominent Russian painter, graphic artist, worked in the field of book illustration and theatrical scenery, the author of sketches for mosaic panels, architectural drawings and more. Born in the village of  Lopial, Vyatka province, in the priests family. First, he received educatian in Vyatka religious school, then - in the seminary. In 1867 he moved to St. Petersburg and began studying at the Drawing School of the Society for Encouraging Arts (studio of I. Kramskoi). During1868 - 1875 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the art studios of P. Basin and V. Vereshchagin. Member and exhibitor of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions (since 1878), the Union of Russian Artists (since 1903). He exhibited his works at numerous art exhibitions in St. Petersburg, Moscow, London, Paris, Rome and other cities. At an early stage of his creative activity (in the 1870s) the genre painting prevailed but later he mainly concentrated on the epic historical painting. Since the early 1880s he began being seriously engaged in religious and icon painting, and at the invitation of Professor A. Prakhov he created paintings for the Volodymyr Cathedral in Kyiv. This work resulted in the title of professor of painting. After 1917 he continued to work on folk and fairy themes. Full-fledged member of the Academy of Arts (1893), Honorary Member of the Academy of Reims (1895) and of many Russian art associations. He was also awarded the Legion of Honor (1902). His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the memorial house-museum of Viktor Vasnetsov in Moscow, the Vyatka Art museum, etc.
