The outstanding master of Russian art, painter, graphic artist. Born in the village of Velyki Soli, Yaroslavl province. In the years of 1880 - 1889 he studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the tutelage of V. Makovskyi, V. Polyenov, and I. Pryanyshnykov. In 1885 and 1886 he got small silver medals, and in 1888 he got a large silver medal and the title of a class artist. In 1889 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the art studios of B. Villevalde and K. Venig. Since 1884 he was an exhibitor at Moscow Scool of painting, Sculpture and Architecture, Moscow Society of Art Lovers (since 1893 he was a member of the Association), the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions (since 1899 was a member of the Association), the Union of Russian Artists (a founding member), the World-of Art Association and others. He worked primarily in Moscow and in the 1890Хs - in Ukraine, where he traveled a lot. Participated in the International Exhibition in D_sseldorf (1904), in the exhibitions of Russian art in Paris and Berlin (1905 - 1906), which were organized by S. Diaghilev. In 1909 he was awarded a gold medal at the International Exhibition in Munich. In the years of 1897 - 1913 he taught at Stroganov Art and Industrial School. In 1912 received the title of academician, in 1916 Р a full-fledged member of the Academy of Arts. During 1923 - 1924 he lived and worked in the U.S., then in Riga where he opened his own school-studio. Author of landscapes and genre scenes. The prominent cultural figure, the author of the memoirs about many famous artists. His works are represented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts, the Riga Art Museum, the Carnegie Museum in Pittsburgh and so on.
