Vitringa Vigerus (1657 - 1725)

A Dutch artist, sea painter. Born in the town of Leeuwarden. He received the proper education and began a successful law practice. For some time he served as a leading lawyer of Friesian province. In the 1690's, he made no less a successful career as an artist and marine painter. Lived in the northern part of Netherlands, in the city of Alkmar, one of the largest centers of maritime trade and fishing. Since 1696 the artist's name was mentioned in the archives of the City painters' guild. He often supplemented the seascapes with genre scenes on the coast. The works are in the public museums in Amsterdam, Berlin, Dresden, Bremen, Brussels, and in the State Hermitage in St. Petersburg.
