Ganzen Oleksii Vasylyovych (1876 - 1937)

Grandson and disciple of Ivan Aivazovskyi. Born in Odessa. In 1890 he studied at Grammar School, and later graduated from the Law Faculty of Novorossiysk University in Odessa. In 1901 went to Munich to get art education and spent ten years abroad. He learned from K. Salzmann and P. Meyerheim at Munich Academy of Arts, E. Brecht in Dresden, and from Jean Lefebvre and Robert Fleury in Paris. Traveled around France, Italy, Netherlands and Sweden. Painted mostly marines, following the tradition of his grandfather. He worked in the techniques of oil painting, watercolor, sepia, gouache and engraving. From 1904 to 1905 he painted the pictures devoted to the Russo-Japanese War. In 1910 he lived with his family in St. Petersburg and in the estate of  Roman-Eli near Feodosia. He participated in the exhibitions of the Association of Itinerant Art Exhibitions in Odessa, St. Petersburg Academy of Arts, the Society of Russian Watercolorists (was its member), exhibited his works in Paris and Berlin. In 1917 his solo exhibition was held in the Artists Association "Myussars Mondays." Performed the government orders. In 1916 issued an album of 25 watercolors "The Russian Imperial Navy." During 1917 - 1919 he lived in Odessa. In 1920 he emigrated with his family to Yugoslavia. The works of the artist were ordered for the royal palaces of Yugoslavia, Romania and Italy. His solo exhibitions were held in Zagreb, Belgrade, Bucharest, Rome and Paris. He was a member of the Association of Russian Artists in Paris. His works are presented in Feodosia Picture Gallery n. a.  Aivazovskyi,and numerous museums of Russia and Europe.
