Deregus Mykhailo Gordiyovych (1904 - 1997)

The prominent Ukrainian painter and graphic artist, teacher and cultural worker. Born in the village of Vesele, Kharkiv region. From 1923 to 1930 he studied at Kharkiv Art Institute under the tutelage of M. Sharonov, S. Prokhorov and O. Kokel. During the years of 1932 - 1941 and 1944 - 1950 he taught at Kharkiv Art Institute. From 1956 to 1962 he was the chairman of the National Artists Union. He is widely known owing to his works on the Cossack themes: a series of "Khmelnytsky Region", "The Pereyaslav Rada", triptych "Ballad of Cossack Holota" and so on. Author of illustrations to the works of Taras Shevchenko, I. Kotlyarevskyi, L. Ukrainka, M. Gogol, M. Nekrasov. Since 1958 a corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Arts, since 1963 - People's Artist of the USSR. Winner of the UkrSSR State Prize n.a. T. Shevchenko (1965). Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Arts, professor since 1995. The National Artists Union of Ukraine has introduced an annual award n.a. M. Deregus for the young artists.
