Erassi Mykhaylo Spyrydonovych (1823 - 1898)

One of the greatest Russian landscape painters of the mid-nineteenth century. Born in Nizhyn. He received his elementary art education under the guidance of O. Venetsianov in the village of Safonkove (1840 - 1847). In the years of 1847 - 1852 he studied at St. Petersburg Art Academy in M. Vorobyovs landscape class. During the period of training he received all existing awards of the academy. In 1852 he was awarded the large gold medal and the title of class artist of the 1st degree with the right of pension trip abroad. From 1853 till 1856 he was a pensioner of the Art Academy in Geneva. He studied under the guidance of the famous Swiss painter A. Kalam. He traveled across Italy. In 1857 he was elected Academician, in 1862 he was awarded the title of professor of landscape painting. Since 1864 he lived in Nice, since 1872 - in Berlin. He also was a member of Berlin Artists Union (1871 - 1895). He is considered to be a bright representative of the academic direction in painting and graphics. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Research Museum of the Russian Art Academy, Stavropol Art Museum, the State Altai Art Museum in Barnaul, the Museum of Fine Arts of the Republic of Karelia in Petrozavodsk, etc.
