Knebel Yosyp Mykolayivych (1854 - 1926)
A famous Russian publisher. Born in Austria-Hungary. He received the humanitarian and economic education at the University of Vienna (1870 - 1876). Since 1878 he lived in Moscow. In 1895 he organized the first specialized edition of fine art in Russia. He published "The History of Russian Art" edited by I. Grabar, numerous monographs of the artists, reproductions of paintings by M. Vrubel, I. Levitan, V. Serov, etc. In his last years he was in charge of the publishing department in the State Tretyakov Gallery. Working at the books of Y. Knebel the prominent figures of science and art such as L. Tolstoy, I. Ostroukhov, M. Rerich, A. Vasnetsov and V. Vasnetsov, K. Timiryazev, M. Menzbir, M. Rubakin and others were involved. The publishing firm "Grosman and Knebel" was distinguished by the high artistic and professional level, and were marked with higher awards at the international exhibitions of book business.
