Cocteau Jean (1889 - 1963)

A distinguished French artist, poet, playwright, film director. Born in Maisons-Laffitte (the suburb of Paris). Since the mid-1910s he entered the artistic circles of Paris. He was on friendly terms and worked with M. Proust, S. Dyagylyev, I. Stravinskyy, P. Picasso, G. Apollinaire, _. Piaf, C. Chanel, etc. One of the main representatives of surrealism in the theatre  and cinema. Commander of the Legion of Honor, member of many academies of the world, honorary president of the Cannes Festival, etc. He was engaged in arts and crafts, graphics, easel and monumental painting, created posters, and sets for performances. In the early 1920s there was published the first graphic series of thematic albums of the master. He successfully worked in the genre of graphic portrait, illustrated his own literary works. The image of Orpheus is dominating in the creative work of the artist and is embodied in plays, movies, paintings and drawings. His works are kept in the fortress "Bastion " in Menton and in many museums and private collections.
