A Russian painter and graphic artist. He studied at Kharkiv Drawing School (till 1888), at Strohanov Central School of Arts and Crafts, during 1897 - 1898 Ð at the Academy of R. Julien in Paris, during 1898 - 1905 - at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of V. Savytskyy and P. Kovalevskyy, at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of K. Korovin (till 1909). One of the founders and the chairman of the "Diamond Jack" Union. Member of such Associations as "Union of Youth", "The World of Arts" (1911 - 1922, with breaks), "Existence", the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1928). Professor, during 1918 - 1821 he taught at Moscow public free art workshop, during 1926 - 1929 at the Higher Art and Technical Institute and at the higher state artistic and technical workshops. People's Artist of Russian Soviet Socialist Republic since 1946. The USSR State Prize (1943). Classical artist of Russian painting, one of the most prominent figures in the art of Russia in the first half of the ••th century.
