An outstanding Ukrainian painter and graphic artist. Born in the village of Dofinivka, Kherson province. During 1870 - 1874 he studied at Odessa Drawing School, during 1875 - 1882 - at Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of P. Chistyakov. In 1876 he was awarded a small silver medal, in the years of 1879 - 1881 - two large silver medals. Member and exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions, founding member of the Society of southern Russian artists (during 1902 - 1921 Р he acted as its permanent head). From1885 till 1921 he taught at Odessa Drawing School. In 1887 together with the artist M. Kuznetsov he made a trip to France, Austria, Germany and Italy. In 1900 he was awarded a silver medal at the World Exhibition in Paris. In 1907 he became an academician. He lived and worked in Odessa. He painted landscapes, portraits, genre pictures. He played an outstanding role in the activities of the Society of southern Russian artists and artistic culture of Ukraine of the early XXth century. I. Repin highly appreciated the works of the artist. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, Odessa Art Museum, etc.
