An outstanding Ukrainian artist, landscape painter. Born in Kyiv in the family of merchant. He studied at Kyiv Drawing School under the guidance of M. Murashko, at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of M. Klodt. He graduated from the course with the title of the 1st degree artist. Since 1889 - academician, since 1900 - member of the Academy of Arts. One of the organizers and the chairman (since 1908) of the ArtistsÕ Union named after A. Kuindzhi in St. Petersburg. He consistently developed Ukrainian themes in his work, following the traditions of Russian realistic art. He also worked in the watercolor technique. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the National Art Museum of Ukraine, in the Art Museums of Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, and many other museums of Ukraine and Russia.
