Kuznetsov Mykola Dmytrovych (1850 - 1929)

A Ukrainian painter. Born in the village of Stepanivka, Kherson province. In 1875 he studied painting under the guidance of the artist F. Malman in Odessa. During 1876 - 1880 he was an auditor of St. Petersburg Academy of Arts and attended the classes of P. Chistyakov. During his studying he received three silver medals. From 1880 till 1895 he lived in his estate in the village of Stepanivka, but he regularly visited Moscow and St. Petersburg to participate in the exhibitions. At the end of 1880s he made friends with E. Mamontov and S. Mamontov, became a member of Abramtsevskyy artistic circle. During 1895 - 1897 he lived in St. Petersburg, during 1897 - 1919 - in Odessa. He traveled a lot through France, Germany, Austria and Italy. Member and exhibitor of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (1881 - 1917, member since 1883), the Society of southern Russian artists (1890 - 1919, founding member). He participated in the World Exhibitions in Paris (1889, 1900, silver medals), Chicago (1893), Autumn Salon in Paris. Since 1895 - Member of the Academy of Arts, in 1900 "for the fame in the art field" he was awarded the title of academician. From 1895 till 1897 - professor, head of the battle painting workshop of the Higher Art School of painting, sculpture and architecture in the Academy of Arts. In the years of 1897 - 1919 he lived in Odessa. He exhibited his works in the salons of V. Izdebskyy (1909 - 1910), in the exhibition of independent artists of Odessa (1917). In 1920 he settled in the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (SCS). He participated in the exhibition of Russian painting in the Brooklyn Museum in New York (1923) and in the exhibition of Russian artists in the Kingdom of SCS (1929). Portrait artist, landscape painter, master of genre painting. His works are stored in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Odessa Art Museum, in the National Museum in Belgrade and in many others.
