Kustodiev Borys Mykhailovych (1878 - 1927)

An outstanding Russian painter, graphic and theatre  artist. Born in Astrakhan. In the years of 1893 - 1896 he studied painting under the guidance of P. Vlasov. From 1896 till 1903 - at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts at the studios of V. Savynskyy and I. Repin. Pensioner of the Academy of Arts in France and Italy since 1904. In the same year he co-founded the New Union of artists. Since 1907 a member of the Union of Russian Artists, since 1911 a member of "The World of Art", since 1923 of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia. Academician of the Axademy of Arts - since 1909. In the early 1900s he began to develop a unique genre of portrait-painting, in which the model was closely associated with its interior or landscape. Since 1906 he worked mostly on canvases on the theme of the peasant and petty-bourgeois provincial merchant's life, more and more resorted to ironic stylization of folk and especially Russian merchant, creating bright, "body" pictures. He completed several series of illustrations for classic literary works and the works of contemporaries. He created stage scenery for the Maly Art Theatre, Moscow Art Theatre,  the Bolshoy Drama Theatre,  etc. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Astrakhan Art Gallery named after B. Kustodiev, etc.
