A prominent Russian engraver, lithographer, graphic artist, a recognized master of xylography, woodcut engravings, easel drawing and watercolors. Born in Eisk, Krasnodar region. He studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1903 - 1904) under the guidance of A. Vasnetsov and A. Stepanov, at Strohanov Central School of Arts and Crafts (1904 - 1905) under the guidance of S. Yaguzhynskyy and S. Nowakowskyy, in private schools in Paris (1905 - 1906). A member of the "The World of Arts" (since 1916). He taught at the Higher Institute of photography and photographic equipment (1919 - 1921), at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts (1924 - 1930). Professor. From 1916 till 1923 he was the keeper of the State Russian Museum. Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1969. He lived in Leningrad, since 1944 - in Moscow. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts and in many other museums.
