Samokysh Mykola Semenovych (1860 - 1944)

A recognized Ukrainian painter and graphic artist, worked in the genres of historical and battle painting. Born in Nizhyn, Chernihiv province. From 1879 till 1885 he studied at St. Petersburg Academy of Arts under the guidance of B. Villevalde, during 1886 - 1889 in the private studios in Paris. In 1885 he received a big gold medal and the title of the class artist of the 1st degree. Academician of the Axademy of Arts since 1890. In the years of 1912 - 1917 he taught in the Acadmy of Arts, carried out the class of the battle painting. Since 1913 Professor, the head of the Higher Art School in the Axademy of Arts, member of the Academy of Arts. During 1936 - 1941 he worked in Kharkiv Institute of Art. Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1937. The State Prize of the USSR (1941). He lived and worked in St. Petersburg, Kharkiv, Simferopol. Together with S. Vasylkivskyy he worked at the illustrations for the albums devoted to the history of Ukraine. His works are presented in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, the State Museum of Fine Arts, in Kyiv National Museum of the Russian Art, in the Art Museums of Kharkiv, Simferopol, etc.
