Chagall Mark Zakharovych (1887 - 1985)

One of the leaders of the world's avant-garde and the most famous artists of the th century. Born in Vitebsk. He studied at Vitebsk Art School of Y. Pen (1906), at the drawing school of the Society for the Promotion of Artists in St. Petersburg (1907 - 1908), at the School of Drawing of O. Zvantseva under the guidance of M. Dobuzhynskyy and L. Bakst (1908 - 1909), in the private studios in Paris (1910 - 1914). Participant of numerous exhibitions: the association "The World of Arts" (1912), the Salons of Independent Artists and Autumn one (1911 - 1914), the group called "Jack of Diamonds" (1916) and many others. In 1914 with the assistance of G. Apollinaire a personal exhibition of the artist was held with great success in Berlin. Since 1915 he lived in Vitebsk. In 1919 he organized and led Vitebsk People's Art School, where invited to teach I. Puni, E. Lysytstskyy, K. Malevich, etc. In 1920 he moved to Moscow. He worked in the Jewish Chamber Theater, took an active part in the activity of the Culture-League section. In 1922 he left Russia forever, led an active creative activity in Europe and the USA, gained the World recognition. The Paris period (1923 - 1941) is marked with the great cycles of book illustrations and the great work on illustrations for the Bible. He spent the years of the World War II in the USA, where he resumed the work for theater and learned the technique of colour lithography. Since 1948 he lived in France. He worked mainly as a monumental painter and graphic artist. He was also engaged in ceramics, sculpture, stained glass, mosaics and wall-paper, published several collections of poetry. His shows were held in major galleries and exhibition halls of the world. The museums of M. Chagall were opened in Vitebsk and Nice. His works are kept in almost all the leading world art museums.
