Kasiyan Vasyl Illich (1896 - 1976)

A founder of the Ukrainian school of the graphic art of the th century, artist and teacher. Born in the village of Mykulyntsi, Ivano-Frankivsk region. In 1926 he graduated from Prague Academy of Arts (under the guidance of M. Shvabinskyy). He participated in the creation of the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute in Kharkiv. He taught in Kyiv Institute of Art (1927 - 1930, 1944 - 1976, since 1927 the professor), in the Ukrainian Polygraphic Institute (1930 - 1937), Kharkiv Institute of Art (1938 - 1941). Primarily he is widely known as a master of book design, illustrator of the works of the Ukrainian classical literature, in particular, he performed illustrations for the six books of "Kobzar" by T. Shevchenko. He worked in the techniques of linocut, engraving, woodcut, etching, etc. Author of the portraits of G. Skovoroda, T. Shevchenko, I. Franko, etc. People's Artist of the USSR since 1944, member of the Acedemy of Arts of the USSR since 1947, the winner of the State Prize named after T. Shevchenko (1964), of the State Prize of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (1971). Chairman of the Artists' Union of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (1962 - 1968). In 1978 he established an annual republican award named after V. Kasiyan and in 1982 in Snyatyn there was opened a museum of the artist. His works are presented in the National Art Museum, in Kharkiv Art Museum, in the National Museum of T. Shevchenko, etc.
