Groncel Vital Jan de (1821 - 1890)

A Belgian painter. Born in Sint-Kwintens-Lennik, Belgium. Since 1849 he lived in St. Petersburg. In 1850 he received the title of the academician from St. Petersburg Academy of Arts. He painted portraits of the Russian nobility and genre compositions. In 1852 he exhibited portraits at the academic exhibition. From 1852 till 1853 he painted eleven icons for the church of the Sveaborzka fortress. In the 1870s he returned to Belgium. During 1879 - 1887 he lived in London, then in Schaerbeek, near Brussels. His works are kept in the State Hermitage, in the Museum of the Russian Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, in the Art Museums of Belgium and the Netherlands.
