Muller Carl Leopold (1834 - 1892)

The founder of the Austrian school of orientalism, a painter and a graphic artist. Born in Dresden in the family of the artist L. Müller. He studied at Vienna Academy of Fine Arts under the guidance of C. von Blaas and J. Reuben. He worked as an illustrator in Viennese theatrical editions (1862 - 1867), made several creative trips to Italy (1857, 1870 - 1873), Hungary (1861 - 1862). In 1873, there was his first visit to Egypt. During 1870 - 1880s he made nine trips to Egypt. He kept a studio in Cairo and trained an entire generation of the Austrian artists - orientalists. Since 1878 - Professor of Vienna Academy of Fine Arts, from 1890 till 1891 - its rector. His students called the artist "Müller the Egyptian". His works are kept in the Austrian Gallery of the Belvedere Palace (Vienna), in the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore, in Farhat Art Museum (Beirut), etc.
