Munkacsy Mihaly (1844 - 1900)

An outstanding Hungarian painter and graphic artist. Born in Munkatsch, Austria-Hungary (now Mukachevo, Transcarpathian region). He studied in the Academies of Arts in Vienna (1865 - 1866) and in Munich (1866 - 1868). During 1868 - 1872 he lived and worked in Düsseldorf. In 1872 he moved to Paris. In 1879 there was held a very successful solo exhibition of the artist at the famous Crystal Palace in Munich. He lived and worked in Paris. Master of portrait, genre scenes, religious and historical paintings. The Museums of M. Munkácsy are located in Mukachevo and the city of Békéscsaba (Hungary). His works are kept in the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest, in the Pushkin Museum, the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Old National Gallery in Berlin, Transcarpathian Art Museum of I. Bokshay, etc.
