Gershov Yuriy Solomonovich (1906 - 1989)

A Russian painter, graphic artist and illustrator. He was born in Dvinsk (now Daugavpils, Latvia). He studied at Minsk Art School (1919 - 1921, under the guidance of Y. Pan), Leningrad Art College (1921 - 1924), the Higher Art and Technical Institute (1924 - 1928, under the guidance of A. Rylov). During 1927 - 1928 he worked in the studio of P. Filonov, was a member of the Society "The Masters of Analytical Art". Participant of numerous exhibitions since 1929. Member of Moscow branch of the Union of Artists of the USSR since 1934. Since 1956 he lived in Leningrad. His personal exhibitions were held in Leningrad (1930, 1987, 1988), London (1965), New York, Washington, Cleveland, Los Angeles, Philadelphia (all - in 1972), Vitebsk (1975). A large retrospective exhibition was held in St. Petersburg in 2004. He painted portraits, landscapes and genre scenes. He worked as a theater artist, was engaged in the illustration of children's books, collaborated with the magazines "Hedgehog" and "Siskin". His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, the State Russian Museum, Vitebsk Regional Museum, in the Art Museums of London, Paris, Jerusalem, etc.
