Carreno Morales Mario (1913 - 1999)

A famous Cuban painter. Born in Havana. He received his primary art education under the guidance of the Cuban landscape artist A. R. Mori. During 1925 - 1926 he studied in the Art Academy of San Alejandro in Havana, since 1934 - in the Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando in Madrid. In 1936 he worked in Mexico, was in friendly terms with the mural painters D. Rivera, J. Clemente, D. A. Siqueiros. In the years of 1937 – 1939 he studied at the Academy of R. Julien in Paris, exhibited his works at numerous shows. In 1940 he moved to New York. He regularly travelled to Cuba. Since 1942 he taught at the Academy of San Alejandro in Havana, since 1946 - professor of painting at the School of Social Research in New York. His friendship with the Chilean poet P. Neruda and insistent invitations from art institutions of Chile encouraged the master’s moving to Santiago in 1958. In 1956 he founded the School of the Arts on the basis of the Catholic University in Santiago. His personal exhibitions were held in the museums and galleries of Havana (1930, 1941, 1993), San Francisco (1944), New York (1947), Caracas (1978), Santiago (2002). Winner of the National Award of Havana (1954), of the Guggenheim Award in New York (1956), of the National Prize of Art of Chile (1982),etc. His works are kept in the Museum of Fine Arts in Santiago, in the National Museum of Fine Arts in Havana, the Museum of Modern Art in New York York, the Museum of Modern Art of Latin America in Washington, the
