Meshkov Vasiliy Nikitich (1867 - 1946)
A Russian painter and graphic artist. Born in Elets, Orel region. During 1883 - 1890 he studied at Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture under the guidance of P. Desyatov, V. Makovskiy, I. Pryanishnikov, E. Sorokin and V. Polenov. In 1886, 1887 and 1890 he was awarded with silver medals and got the title of the class artist after the graduation. Participant of the exhibitions since 1886. On V. Polenov’s recommendation he participated in Mamontov Drawing evenings. Since the early 1890s he lived in Moscow. Member and exhibitor of Moscow Society of Art Lovers (1893 - 1900). One of the founders and a board member of Moscow Society of Artists (1893 - 1903, with interruptions). He demonstrated his works at the exhibitions of the Association of Traveling Art Exhibitions (1892 - 1923, with interruptions), Vyatka Art Circle (1911 - 1912), at the National Industrial and Agricultural Exhibition in Nizhny Novgorod (1896). In 1900 he founded his own art school, where he taught until 1926. After 1917 he worked at the Commission for the protection of works of art and antiquities at Moscow Soviet. He taught at Moscow Polygraphic schools. He participated at the exhibitions of the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924 - 1928), the Society of the Artistsnamed after I. Repin (1927 - 1929), etc. Members of «Sixteen» Union (1922 - 1928). He held his personal exhibitions in Moscow (1916, 1937), Leningrad (1937). People's Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic since 1943. Author of landscapes, portraits and genre paintings. His works are kept in the State Tretyakov Gallery, in the Picture Galleries of Astrakhan, Kaluga and Taganrog, in Elets museum, in the Art Museums of Zaporizhye, Nizhny Tagil and Lipetsk.
