Roerich Mykola Kostyantynovych (1874 - 1947)

An outstanding Russian painter, social activist, writer, scientist. Born in St. Petersburg. From 1883 till 1893 he studied under the guidance of the artist M. Mikeshyn, during 1893 - 1897 - in St. Petersburg Academy of Arts in the workshop of A. Kuindzhi. He was a member of the Russian archeological society, admired Slavic history. In the years of 1900 - 1901 he studied in the studio of F. Cormon in Paris. He exhibited his works at the shows of the association "The World of Art" (1902), the World Exhibition in Paris (1900) and in St. Louis (USA, 1904). In 1906 he became the director of the drawing school of the Society for the Encouragement of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he reorganized the studios and attracted to teaching such artists as V. Mate, I. Bilibin, J. Tsioglinskyy, etc. During 1907 - 1914 he designed many productions in the theaters of St. Petersburg and Paris. In 1910 he was elected the chairman of "The World of Art". In the 1900s the name of Roerich was widely known not only in Russia. Since 1905 there were held numerous personal exhibitions in the Czech Republic, Austria, Germany, Finland, Norway, Denmark, the UK, etc. In 1920 in New York there was held a personal exhibition, which was shown in 28 US cities. In 1923 in New York City the was opened the museum of M. Roerich. The same year the artist and his family went on the expedition to India and the Central Asia, where he studied ancient cultures, collected archaeological and ethnographic materials. In 1928 in the Kullu valley (India) the Himalayan Research Institute initiated by Roerich was founded. From 1920 till 1940 he wrote several articles and books on culture and ethics, which were published in various languages. He was a member of more than forty scientific and artistic institutions of the world: the honorary president of the US-Russian Cultural Association in New York, a member of the Yugoslav Academy of Sciences and Arts in Zagreb, a member of Rheims Academy in France and of many others. His works are kept in the State Russian Museum, the State Tretyakov Gallery, the International Centre-Museum of M. Roerich in Moscow, St. Petersburg State Museum and the Institute of the Roerich family, Roerich Museum in New York, etc.
